Messmore and Damon were known for the full-scale mechanical dinosaurs they debuted at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. According to another article in the “New Yorker”, this new dragon took advantage of the company’s prowess in mechanical engineering, as well as the new breakthroughs in materials available to prop makers.

In the latter 1970s I began corresponding with Francis Messmore of Messmore & Damon, a New York-based company that specialized in mechanical figures. Messmore & Damon had made the mechanical dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures for “ The World a Million Years Ago ,” a popular attraction that premiered at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, “A Century of Progress,” presented in a large dome-like building .

As a tool to promote animatronic displays, Messmore and Damon had the figures produced in metal versions. In 1933 the hollow metal statues were sold exclusively as boxed sets at the Expo. The partnership between James Messmore and Joseph Damon began far from paleontology. Messmore was the son of vaudeville performers from Detroit, and moved to New York in the 1900s. In 1924, the model-making company Messmore & Damon, Inc. of New York unleashed their masterpiece: the Amphibious Dinosaurus Brontosaurus, a moving, breathing, roaring animatronic dinosaur, based on displays in the American Museum of Natural History. Messmore married Meta Decker (1890-1985) and they had one son, Francis (1916-1997), known as "Fran." Fran joined Messmore and Damon in 1946, working on department store displays and ran the company until his death in 1997. The company was dissolved on September 2, 1998.
