As the model age of zircon (THf (DM)) is the minimum age of the source of the melt, a more realistic two-stage age THfC (DM) was calculated by projecting the initial 176Hf/177Hf value of zircon onto the line of depleted mantle, with the use of the average crustal value of 176Lu/177Hf = 0.015. The 176 Hf/ 177 Hf composition of inherited and magmatic zircon in the 538 Ma S-type Peninsula pluton (South Africa) has been determined at different scales. Calculates the initial 176Hf/177Hf values, the initial epsilon hafnium values, the model age using the measured 176Lu/177Hf value and the model age assuming the parental magma was produced from an average continental crust (176Lu/177Hf = 0.015) that originally was derived from the depleted mantle (Griffin, 2004). Hf isotopic analyses of all 6 fractions yielded very consistent results with the average 176Hf/177Hf=0.282174 ± 12 (2 S.D.), relative to JMC-475 176Hf/177Hf=0.282162 ± 5 (2 S.D.). Laser ablation analyses of individual grains from the six fractions yielded similar results, with an average 176Hf/177Hf=0.282174 ± 15 (2 S.D.).
